Merry Christmas

It's so easy this time of year to get caught up in a massive "t0-do" list. There's shopping that needs to get done, presents that need to be wrapped, cookies that won't bake themselves, and a whole mess of cleaning before the family comes over. In the midst of all of this, are we forgetting what Christmas is really about?

Another trap this time of year comes in a very pretty form. December turns into lights, ornaments, presents under the tree, stockings hung by a fireplace, and a cute little story about Santa and reindeer. That's not to say that any of these things are bad. But when these things become our focus we again forget what Christmas is about.

The thing is, Christmas is about one thing - a baby.

A baby born to a virgin, wrapped in cloth, and placed in a manger.

A baby who gave up the worship of angels for the humble worship of shepherds.

A baby who left his rightful place in heaven to come to earth and ultimately die for you and me.

For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

The First Week of Advent

"There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
"And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesses,
Who shall stand as a banner to the people;
For the Gentiles shall seek Him,
And His resting place shall be glorious."
Isaiah 11:1-2, 10

The first week of Advent focuses on the Old Testament prophecies surrounding the coming of Christ.  In an effort to bring the focus back to Christ and the exciting gift of salvation through Him, I have decided to celebrate Advent in my home starting this year.  Sunday was the first day of Advent and the Prophecy Candle was lit.  I will be reading out of Isaiah all week as we look at God's heart for His people and the world.  I am very excited to begin a tradition of observing Advent and to have a more meaningful Christmas with those I love!

Do you or your family observe Advent or do you have a way to bring the focus back to Jesus and the gift of life that God gave us?
